Driving during the winter poses a safety risk such that most driving experts would advise one to drive only when necessary.
NY Daily News says, snow tires may be worth the investment when living in an area that is known for snowy climate during the winter months.
“If you live in a snowy climate and blizzards are a common occurrence, it’s time to invest in a set of snow tires. For a few hundred dollars you’re buying some of the best all-weather insurance for your vehicle. You might wince at the extra cash outlay, but it’s certainly a cheaper investment than having your crumpled car or truck towed out of a snowbank.”

The Canada Safety Council also shared a list of precautionary measures to take when driving on snowy roads. Apart from ensuring that one’s vehicle is winter-ready, sensible and extra-careful driving will keep winter vehicle accidents at bay.
“Keep a snow brush/scraper in your car, along with possible emergency items such as a lightweight shovel, battery jumper cables, and a flashlight. Make sure that mirrors, all windows, and the top of your vehicle, are free of snow or frost before getting onto the road.”

Travelers.com meanwhile shared advice on what to do when the vehicle suddenly gets stuck or gets caught amid a snowstorm.
“If you do venture out or are unexpectedly caught in a snowstorm and encounter problems, if your car is safely out of harm’s way, stay in your car and wait for help. You can run the car heater to stay warm for 10 minutes every hour, but make sure your exhaust pipe is clear of snow. There is a danger of carbon monoxide poisoning if snow blocks the pipe and enables the deadly gas to build up in your car. Open your window slightly to help prevent any buildup.”
