Low versus high mileage

Car mileage is usually a guide for preventative maintenance checks. It also plays a huge role when a car is put into the market for resale, as some second hand car buyers use it as a guide on the present condition of the car.

Autotrader.com came up with a guide for second hand car buyers on how they should treat the information they get from the odometer of the car that they are buying. They also explained in the same article the importance of a car’s age and if that is more important than mileage.

“If you’re buying a used car, mileage should be a huge factor in your decision. After all, a car’s odometer is a measure of how much life it’s lived — so a car with only 70,000 miles is worth a lot more than one that’s covered 170,000 miles. Engine parts, suspension components and other factors are only designed to last so long, and a car with too many miles is rarely a good decision.”

Where mileage comes to play

Progressive.com also mentioned about the other factors that should be considered by car buyers in relation to car mileage.

“A used car with 10,000 miles that spent its life in Arizona will be quite different from a used car with 10,000 miles that came from Boston. Cold and wet weather can affect the health of a car adversely. A used car that was left out in the elements will also be different than a car that was kept in a garage. Where the car was used will also differ between a city driver and a country driver. While lower miles might look great, if the car sat unused for most of its life, it could also need some serious maintenance.”

Apparently, mileage also has a repercussion on a car’s insurance cost. Personal finance website Nerdwallet explained this in one of their web posts.

“Several other companies have usage-based insurance programs that provide savings based on mileage and driving behavior, tracked using in-vehicle technology. Allstate, for instance, says mileage is the most important factor in its Drivewise program, with drivers saving the most when they drive at or below 12,000 miles annually but still able to “realize some benefit” at up to 15,000 miles driven.”
