Car rust is definitely unsightly. It also affect the auto body as it corrodes a part of it. Unfortunately, it happens to some vehicles due to damage, wear and tear, or even the environment or surroundings of the vehicle.

Popular Mechanics came up with a comprehensive advice for car owners who are dealing with vehicle rust in their automobiles. In their article they shared the different types of rust and what can be done to eradicate it.

“Otherwise-good cars are regularly sent to early graves because of rust, but the problem is preventable. With iron-based metals, battling oxidation can be a Sisyphean task; in spite of the advanced coatings and alloys developed by chemists and engineers, steel’s unstable chemical makeup means it will always succumb to rust in a natural environment. This doesn’t mean your car is doomed. Understanding the rusting process, the problematic areas, and the ways to address trouble means your pride and joy can stay on the road as long as you do.”

Do the DIY Route

Family Handyman for its part, came up with a guide for those who may want to repair their car rust via the DIY Route. Their step-by-step guide came with photos such that it is easier to follow.

“Rust repair isn’t hard, but it is time-consuming (mostly waiting for primer and paint to dry between steps). Plan to spend about $100 on supplies like sandpaper, primer, masking tape and poly sheeting, a tack rag, polishing compound and touch-up paint and clear coat. Choose a calm, overcast day and block out the full day to fix the most common rust spots on the hood and doors.”

Cars Guide also has its own version of DIY Repair guide for car owners. In the article that they posted, they said that the first thing car owners should do is to identify the type of rust damage.

“The first step to any rust repair DIY job is to identify the problem. Rust will start under the paint of your car hidden out of sight, but eventually bubbles to the surface looking like cauliflower under the paint. Car rust repair begins with a thorough inspection of the area to see if it has spread along a panel or is in one small area. Rust normally starts where dirt gets trapped in an area over time, traps moisture, and then eats the metal away.”
