It is already a given that children need to be strapped on a car seat when travelling in automobiles. In addition to this, there are more ways to ensure their safety during car rides.
Australian parenting website, Raising Children came up with a complete guide on ensuring children’s safety, and gave extra tips to keep kids safe while traveling.
“Ensure your child always keeps arms, legs and head inside the car when it’s moving or parked on the side of the road. Activate childproof door locks so your child can’t get out when the car is moving or standing still. These locks are usually inside most car doors. Check your car’s manual. Keep loose items in the glove box or the boot or behind the cargo barrier in station wagons and four-wheel drives. Loose items can fly about in a crash and increase the risk of injury.”

The Importance of Car Seat
Safety.com meantime emphasized and reiterated how important it is to correctly use car seats on children.
“While specific car seat criteria will vary from state to state, every state in the U.S. requires child safety seats for infants and children in some capacity. And aside from being a great safety precaution intuitively, the benefits of effectively utilizing a car seat for your child’s safety is statistically significant as well. In fact, according to the CDC’s Fact Sheet on Child Passenger Safety, the use of a car seat reduces the risk for death to infants (aged 1 year and under) by 71%; and to toddlers (aged 1–4 years) by 54% in passenger vehicles.”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has published in their official website, comprehensive yet easy to understand car safety information every parent should know about and apply in their everyday lives.
“Every car seat needs to be installed using either the lower anchors or a seat belt to secure it in place, never both. If you choose to use a seat belt to install your car seat, pay close attention to how to “lock” your seat belt according to the vehicle’s owner manual. With a forward-facing car seat, use a tether if one is available. Before installing your car seat make sure you understand the function and location of the vehicle and car seat parts that are used in installation.”
